Tinos3: a look back on October

October was a really good month for Tinos3. From reaching 100 commits to completing a full rewrite and making proper progress on a desktop environment, October has been a productive month for the project. So here's a look back at October 2026 for Tinos3.

Tinos3 reaches 100 commits in less than 4 months

Tinos3 reached 100 commits on October 31 and it got also a few more commits during the same day. Officially Tinos3 started it's development on around July 17th and it is now November 1st as of writing this post. So the commit amount averages a bit under 1 commit a day. the largest number of commits in a single PR is part of the rewrite. Currently though if you go to the repository and on the main branch, you'll not see the 100 commits. Currently it is only in the feat/gui branch, where the current desktop work is being done.

Tinos3's rewrite

Tinos3 was rewritten in October and it got over 50 commits on bit over a week. It was kind of annoying to make a full rewrite but we got it through and it has been merged. The release that came of the PR is 0.2 beta 1.

Why a rewrite?

The existing code structure was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Additionally, Lua support wasn't considered when the original architecture was designed, making it harder to integrate properly.

Rather than continuing to build on an increasingly difficult structure, I decided it was time to clean things up and rewrite most of the OS from the ground up.

What's planned for November and later

As i have said in a previous post, the future is uncertain for Tinos3. We're actively supporting and developing Tinos3. I also said that there's a lot of work ahead for 0.2 but we're happy to release 0.2 when it is ready. We're pouring a lot of time into this OS and also hoping to improve the user experience down the line

Tinos3 and the great issue wars

Tinos3 and the Great Issue Wars

Hi! We're taking a look back at October and the issues Tinos3 has encountered along the way. These issues have ranged from relatively easy fixes to problems that are outside my control.

There have been a LOT of bugs in Tinos3 this month. However, since we rewrote the environment and the entire codebase, we've also managed to eliminate a few issues from the old, legacy codebase. This post will focus exclusively on issues encountered after the rewrite.

Lua

When Lua was introduced during the rewrite, we encountered an issue where Lua wouldn't recognize a custom-registered Lua function. This eventually resulted in a .NET exception when the function returned a nil value.

It was one of the issues we had to investigate while getting Lua integration working properly in the rewritten codebase.

Formatting and partitioning

More recently, we encountered a bug in the FDisk utility that prevented it from formatting a partition unless the disk had already been mounted.

This created a bit of a catch-22: the utility needed to mount the partition before formatting it, but the partition couldn't be mounted because it didn't have a filesystem yet.

Fortunately, this issue has now been fixed!

Graphics, resources, and the mouse

As development of the desktop environment and window system continues, we've encountered an issue where the mouse cursor doesn't change position. This issue remains unresolved as of writing this post.

We also ran into a few issues involving the mouse cursor's resources, but those have since been fixed. These fixes weren't a major part of the development commits, so they were easy to overlook among the other changes.

What's next?

Development continues, and so does the debugging. With Tinos3 0.2 still a way off, there's plenty of work left to do as we improve the desktop experience and resolve the remaining issues. Our goal is to release Tinos3 0.2 by the end of 2027.

More updates will follow as development progresses!

Tinos3 and the 0.2 update and status

🚀 Tinos3 Development Update: The Road to Version 0.2

About Tinos3

Tinos3 is an operating system built using Cosmos Gen3. Official development began in July 2026, and the project has been actively evolving ever since.

The Philosophy Behind Version 0.2

We know that Tinos3 Version 0.1 was rushed out just a few days after initial development began. We learned a lot from that release, and we want to be clear: Version 0.2 will not be rushed.
Our focus for this update is on polish, stability, and core improvements. While this means it will take more time to develop, the end result will be a much more refined and reliable operating system.

Current Status: Early Development

Tinos3 Version 0.2 is currently in early development, and Beta 1 is now available.
⚠️ Please note: Because this is an early beta, you should expect bugs and incomplete features. It is intended for testing and feedback, not daily driving.

What We Are Working On

We believe in transparent development. Here are the primary issues and features currently being tackled for the 0.2 release:

Get Involved!

Want to help shape the future of Tinos3?
  1. Download the Beta 1 release and test it out.
  2. If you find a bug, please report it in our GitHub Issues tab.
  3. Consider giving the repository a ⭐ Star to support the project!

Looking Ahead

The future of Tinos3 is still uncertain, but we're happy with how far the project has come. As the lead developer and maintainer, I'm proud of the progress we've made in such a short time.

There's still a lot of work ahead, and Version 0.2 is an important step in Tinos3's development. Thank you to everyone who has supported the project, tested releases, or contributed feedback along the way.
